Why we don't sell "designer furniture"

In our industry, we constantly come across the phrase "designer furniture." It sounds catchy, but from our perspective, it’s a bit of a contradiction.

Why do we think so? To us, design isn’t a premium feature, a luxury add-on, or a specific visual style. Design is a process. It is the fundamental prerequisite for every object that comes into existence. Everything around us, from a teaspoon to a highway bridge, was conceived, drafted, and engineered by someone. In that sense, everything is design.

We understand why the term is used; it’s meant to separate mass production from something "better." But in reality, calling a chair "designer furniture" is like calling a book "lettered."

It states the obvious while missing the point. We believe that dividing things into "designer" and "non-designer" makes no sense. There is only good design (functional, thoughtful, durable, and aesthetic) and bad design, which doesn’t work, doesn't last, or is merely made to look good on the surface.

At Master & Master, we simply don’t sell "designer furniture." We just strive to create good design.
